“Light means Life”

Natural sun- and daylight is the most comfortable and healthy source of light. As such, it is essential that architects lay out work and living spaces accordingly. But what if the site does not allow for natural daylight? Or how can design create comfort in the dark winter months? In conditions where natural light is not possible, artificial light should strive to deliver equally comfortable and warm light. It is not just the quality of light, but the lightning system as a whole that needs to be studied in order to create a successfully lit space.

By integrating a lighting concept early in the design process, it can benefit the entire project! A good lightning system should consider the following:

– Assist with orientation
– Focus and emphasize special design features
– Allow rooms to appear larger
– Create an inviting atmosphere

I was fortunate to have learned these types of lightning strategies from my father at an early age.

History Fichtel Lamps

A designer and builder of lamps, the story of Fichtel Lampen began with my grandfather’s business. From 1970 till 1988 my father had a shop at Odeonsplatz in Munich. Over the course of his career he was commissioned to work for companies such as BM and Triumph International, as well as more locally recognized projects such as Krombacher Brewery and Siemens Wittelsbacher Platz.

The most successful type of light fixtures were patented sanded Plexiglas-lights. They were manufactured in various shapes, as wall lamps or ceiling lamps and they create that kind of comfort, as previously mentioned. In addition, the brass that was used for the structural elements of the lamp was taken into consideration, increasing the warmth and comfort, as well as the natural quality of light. Before being formed, the Plexiglas was first sanded and colored by hand, which meant that every piece was unique. These carefully crafted fixtures will be forever timeless, providing ambient light in the form of a unique piece of art.
